The 2021 edition of the Armenian men’s national Volleyball championship ended on Saturday, December 18, after the competition had started this past April with participation of five teams.

FIMA are the newly crowned Armenian national champions

This year’s championship coincides with the dawn of a new era for Armenian Volleyball, since it provided all participating teams with the opportunity to play one match per week for about four months, with the five teams playing against each other at home as well as away. This means that all teams contested as many as 16 matches – a truly unprecedented record in the history of the Volleyball Federation of Armenia (VFA).

“This was the beginning of a brand new, high-quality era for Armenian Volleyball,” said VFA Secretary General Karen Asmaryan.

FIMA and CSKA played a truly exciting match on the final day of competition in Yerevan

The fifth round of the championship took place at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex, with seats for up to 400 fans and all the necessary equipment. The VSport TV channel broadcasted all matches, with live streaming available on YouTube as well – thus reaching an even larger audience.

The teams of FIMA, CSKA, and KhMOMM were in contention for the title until the last round of the competition. Team FIMA, whose roster included the more experienced players, had suffered no defeat until the last round of the championship to lead the charts. Only in the last competition day of the final round, CSKA managed to beat FIMA 3-1 after a truly dramatic and highly entertaining match.

FIMA, CSKA and KhMOMM claimed the top three spots of the final standing

Despite this, FIMA triumphed as national champions, with CSKA (representing the Armenian Army) and KhMOMM claiming second and third place, respectively.

Representatives of the VFA, the heads of the Ministry of Sports as well as of the Army of the Republic of Armenia presented the top three teams with their respective medals and awards. The best athletes of the championship returned home with special souvenirs and balls.
