Istanbul, Turkey, November 10, 2020. The 66th edition of the prestigious Gillette Milliyet Athletes of the Year Awards took place last week with a special ceremony held at the Volkswagen Arena in Istanbul. After securing the gold medal from the #EuroVolleyU19W contested this past summer, where they beat Serbia 3-2 in a truly dramatic gold medal match, the Turkish U19 women’s national team emerged as the recipients of the Islam Çupi Milliyet Sports Extra Award.

The success achieved in Bosnia and Herzegovina accounted for Turkey’s second title in this age-group competition after a previous gold-medal winning performance registered in the 2012 edition of the continental championship. It was a truly special moment, since the event in Zenica and Osijek coincided with the much-awaited return of competitive Volleyball after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
