Obituary – Volleyball legend Gabriella Kotsis Attiláné

It is with deep sorrow that the Hungarian Volleyball Federation announces the passing of one of the greatest Volleyball coaches of all time, Dr Gabriella Kotsis Attiláné. She died in the morning of Thursday, August 17, at the remarkable age of 95.

Dr Kotsis Attiláné, widely known as 'Gabi néni’ (‘Auntie Gabi') was one of the most appreciated figures in Hungarian and international Volleyball. Her commitment, professional and innovative views, and her infinite love for the game made her a true legend. 
 
The CEV joins the Hungarian Volleyball Federation joins as well as fans in Hungary and around the world in mourning her passing and remembering with deep affection her remarkable legacy. The most heartfelt condolences are extended to the grieving family. 

Dr Kotsis Attiláné reached the peak of her carrier as the head coach of the Hungarian women’s national team. She was at the helm of Team Hungary at three Olympic Games – reaching the semifinals in 1976 and 1980. During her tenure, Hungary had previously finished fifth in 1972. Under her guidance, Hungary claimed a silver medal from the 1975 European Championship in Belgrade, which was a spectacular and unforgettable success for the country. No wonder that during her period as head coach, the Hungarian national team was considered one of the best in the world.

In 2010, the decorated coach was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, United States, and she also received several important professional and state awards in her home country.

The Hungarian women’s national team will make their debut tonight at EuroVolley 2023 – playing hosts Belgium and remembering their legend.
