Northern Ireland Volleyball is paying tribute to Paul McIlwaine, who after three decades of dedicated service has stepped down from his role as Schools Director. A familiar face to almost everyone in the Northern Irish Volleyball community, Paul has been involved in every aspect of the organisation over the years. His commitment has inspired new generations of players and strengthened the network of schools and clubs that underpin the sport.

Reflecting on his contribution, NI Volleyball President Jonathan McFadden said: “Over the past 30 years, Paul has been more than just a coach, official, and organiser; he has been a driving force behind the growth and development of the sport throughout the country. Paul’s passion for Volleyball in Northern Ireland is deep-rooted not only for the game itself but for the community it builds. Through the decades, he has worn many hats – coach, referee, mentor, board member (including President), and friend. Whether on the court, or behind the scenes, Paul has given his time, energy, and heart to Volleyball with a level of dedication that few can match.

His passion has helped shape grassroots programmes, inspire young players, and elevate the competitive standards of Volleyball in Northern Ireland. He has been instrumental in organising tournaments, supporting schools and clubs, and ensuring that the sport remains inclusive, accessible, and vibrant for all and for that we all thank him. He will be a huge miss to the Northern Ireland school’s commission, in his time he has overseen growth from 1 competition per year to 12 this past season with over 1,000 participants competing, truly remarkable numbers which continue to grow. His steady leadership, calm presence, and tireless advocacy have created lasting impacts that will be felt by generations of players.

Thank you, Paul, for 30 extraordinary years. Volleyball in Northern Ireland is larger, stronger, and more united because of volunteers like you, and we wish you the best for whatever the future may hold.”

Paul’s departure marks the end of an extraordinary chapter, but his legacy will live on in the thousands of young people who found their love of Volleyball thanks to his guidance, encouragement, and leadership. Paul will not be totally absent from the Volleyball courts going forward, as he recently passed his International Volleyball FIVB Level 2 Coaching Award.
