Yerevan, Armenia, February 8, 2021. As the Armenian Volleyball family celebrates 95 years since the introduction of the sport in the Caucasus country, the Volleyball Federation of Armenia (VFA) has planned a number of activities to mark the anniversary, starting with the U16 national championship named after Sergey Arakchyan held this past week in Yerevan.

Sergey Arakchyan was one of the founders and pioneers of Volleyball in Armenia, an internationally renowned referee and the best Armenian Volleyball coach of the XX century. Back in 1962, Arakchyan refereed at the World Championship held in the Soviet Union. He was the President of the Volleyball Federation of Armenia from 1961 to 1965.

The U16 national championship named in his honour finished on Sunday in Yerevan. The tournament featured four men’s and five women’s teams. Team Avan coached by Emma Abrahamyan and Shoghik Balyan was the clear dominant force in the women’s competition, where they swept aside all of their three opponents without dropping a single set. Team Shengavit and Team KHMOMM finished in second and third place, respectively.

Team Shengavit coached by Smbat Gevorgyan displayed a very solid performance to claim top honours from a closely contested men’s competition. Team Arabkir and Team KHMOMM were the winners of the silver and bronze medals.

The top three teams of the championship received diplomas, medals, and cups, with special prizes awarded to the best players of the competition. Moreover, the winning teams secured the right to participate in the Armenian U16 Youth Volleyball Championship, which will be taking place on February 15-19, while the management of the Avan Children and Youth Sports School received letters of appraisal from the Yerevan Municipality and the VFA for supporting the organisation of the championship.
