Following the four qualifying rounds played on four different days back in November and December, the eight finalists in both the boys’ and girls’ Year 11 Schools Tournaments organised by the Malta Volleyball Association came together again on Thursday, January 11, at the Cottonera Sports Complex. The eight qualified teams for the finals, from the starting 28, were MRC Mosta Lily Secondary, STMC Zejtun Secondary, St Martin’s College and SBC Kirkop Secondary in the boys’ category. St Monica B’Kara, San Andrea School, MRC Mosta Lily Secondary and St Michael Foundation had qualified in the girls’ category.

The Year 11 Schools Finals were a major success

The four teams in each category played in a round-robin format and the matches were contested on a best out of three sets on 15 points. The champions in the boys’ category were St Martin’s College who won the competition on the direct encounter rule, as they finished on same points as Zejtun Secondary with two wins and one loss. On the other hand, the girls’ category was won by St Michael Foundation who won all their games, including the decisive game against St Monica.

St Martin's College triumphed in the boys' category

There was an incredible atmosphere on the day, as was the case in all the four rounds played previously, with hard-fought games and fair challenge to make it a fantastic event. Students who commented after the tournament declared that they enjoyed every minute. Several players have represented their schools in previous years and stated that the level this year was even higher than in the past editions. On their part, teachers accompanying the teams have shown their appreciation for the organisation of the event and confirmed their presence in the next tournaments for younger students in the coming months. At the end of the event, medals were awarded to the winning teams.

All matches were fiercely contested by the four finalists in each gender

A big well done goes to all schools and their respective teachers for their commitment and support, as this competition is becoming one of the most important in the schools’ calendar. The event formed part of the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’ and was organised by the Malta Volleyball Association (MVA) in collaboration with the Education Department and SportMalta.

St Michael Foundation won the girls' competition courtesy of three wins in as many matches
