On September 18, representatives of the Volleyball Federation of Armenia (VFA) visited Khachatur Abovyan School No. 4 in Etchmiadzin, where a training session was held with students from the sixth grade as activities run in conjunction with the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’ have resumed in the Caucasus country after the summer break.

The city of Etchmiadzin is regarded as the spiritual centre of Armenia, since it is home to the Mother Church of Armenia and to the seat of the country’s spiritual leaders.

In this beautiful city, Volleyball has always been considered one of the local favourite sports. Currently, the Volleyball Federation of Armenia is holding there the U17 Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball Championships with participation of as many as 20 teams from different cities across Armenia.

After the historic CEV U16 Volleyball European Championship held in Yerevan in August, there has been a growing interest in Volleyball among the local children and youth. The evidence of all this is in the words of coaches operating in Armenia, who testify that an unprecedented number of children have joined their teams.

In the local school at Etchmiadzin, a large number of children are already playing Volleyball, and after the latest event, the VFA hopes that the figure will increase even further. This will also be facilitated by the fact that the school’s physical education teacher is Samvel Barseghyan, who is himself a former Volleyball player.

During the training, the students learned the key rules of the game and familiarised themselves with some technical skills. The school was also provided with volleyballs by the Volleyball Federation of Armenia so that such sessions can continue throughout the school year.
