CEV School Project activities have continued in the Faroe Islands. The southernmost island of the archipelago, and it takes two hours to sail there, played host to a school competition featuring six sports and involving as many as 170 students from four schools all aged nine to 13. The programme included athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, CrossFit, and volleyball.

Two Volleyball courts were set up for the 10 teams involved in the event, so that each team would contest four matches throughout the day. Everything went well and all the students were eager to learn more about the game. One school joined the event with as many as five teams. Their pupils all play Volleyball and have reached Level 2 already, so it was fun to see how well they handled two touches each time.

Later in April, a national tournament was held in the capital city Torshavn for the winners from the five ‘local’ competitions previously contested in February and March. There were 300 students from all around the Faroe Islands, divided into three age categories and involved in six sports - basketball, badminton, CrossFit, athletics, rowing, and volleyball, which was open to pupils from the fourth grade.

Between matches the students were encouraged to go around and make new friends, starting a conversation by asking their peers’ names and what they liked best to do and so on.

All teams played four matches, with the winning teams securing two points, and if the game ended in a draw, they got one point each.

The tournament went very well with the help of the teachers and the students were excited, happy, and they encouraged each other while playing.

The Faroese Sports Confederation made a survey in which they asked the teachers various questions regarding this project, and most of the answers were highly positive. The kids were happy to be introduced to the various sports, so the Faroese Sports Confederation has devised plans to expand the project even further to more classes - perhaps also with an increased focus on the social side to it.
