April means Beach Volleyball, at least in Ireland! The Beach Volleyball school championships were established by Volleyball Ireland last year in two coastal areas and this year expanded to a third location. This allows Volleyball Ireland to deliver the three events in all three provinces - Leinster, Connacht, and Munster. With all three events sold out, the appetite for Beach Volleyball has never been higher.

Unfortunately, due to the wind, the event in Munster has been postponed until May 4 but Volleyball Ireland delivered both Leinster and Connacht to 39 teams in Galway and Meath. Colaiste Muire and Our Lady’s Bower won the respective girls’ events, as Sutton Park School and St Brigid’s College won the boys’ competitions.

As the school year draws to a close, the delivery of educational courses begins to slow however Volleyball Ireland still were able to deliver Colaiste Muiure Referee course to 21 students and TY volley to 13 students in Ardscoil Mhuire.

April marked the quarter and semi-finals for the Junior 6v6 championships. This is the largest schools 6v6 event with as many as 146 teams taking place for 11 to 13-year-olds. The National Finals are scheduled for May 8 and 12 lucky schools have progressed to Girls A, B, C and D Finals as well as Boys Cup and Shield finals.

The Volleyball Ireland (VLY.) Schools Cup semi-finals also took place to set up an amazing repeat of the Senior Championships which occurred back in December. Truly cementing their places as the top volleyball schools in the country, St Brigid’s College will take on Patrician High School in the boys while the girls of Colaiste Muire and Holy Family SS face off again for glory on May 5.
