School Project involves 775 Icelandic kids in early October alone

The Icelandic Volleyball Association (BLI) have started to run more and more actions in conjunction with the CEV School Project, which they are delivering in close collaboration with the CEV, the Icelandic Olympic Association (ISI), UMFI and many clubs from across the country. October has been a very busy and productive month for the Icelandic Volleyball family – with the U17 women’s team claiming a historic gold medal at the NEVZA Championships held last week in Ikast, Denmark.
The start has been a great and promising one as the Icelandic Volleyball Association has drafted ambitious plans for the delivery of the CEV School Project. The kids are back on the courts, with their happy faces after each event showing that the work done at the BLI is paying dividends.
After working primarily with coaches and physical education teachers back in August and September, the BLI delivered the first event involving kids on October 4. A large-scale such action in the city of Akureyri could unfortunately not take place as planned due to COVID-19 restrictions. The organisers had to cancel this event, featuring more than 800 students, following an outbreak of infections across a number of schools. However, the Icelandic Volleyball Association will be trying to deliver this action as soon as it is safe to do so in order to provide schools from the north of the country with an opportunity to involve their students as well.

We could adjust the preparation and we collected a lot of experience for the bigger events coming up in two weeks. It was great to see the kids playing, we are preparing the follow-up so that as many as possible join Volleyball clubs.”

In total, the roadshow delivered in early October involved 20 schools, 60 teachers / coaches and as many as 775 students as follows:
- Reyðarfjörður on Monday, October 4 - 4 schools, 15 teachers and 180 kids
- Akranes on Friday, October 8 - 1 school, 6 classes, 12 teachers and 120 kids
- Isafjordur on Monday, October 11 - 4 schools, 9 teachers and 180 kids
- Hveragerdi on Wednesday, October 13 - 2 schools, 7 teachers and 35 kids
- Reykjanesbær on Thursday, October 14 - 7 schools, 17 teachers and 260 kids
