This past May 24-26, a national workshop in Volleyball and Beach Volleyball was run in Malta with much success. This three-day event organised in conjunction with the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’ aimed to enhance the skills and knowledge of participants in both Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, with a focus on physical education (PE) teachers and beginners in Beach Volleyball. The workshop was a successful gathering of enthusiasts and educators, thus promoting the development of both Volleyball and Beach Volleyball in the Mediterranean archipelago.

The first day of the workshop saw an impressive turnout with 65 participants, primarily PE teachers from various schools across Malta. The focus of the day was on integrating Volleyball into the school curriculum and enhancing the teaching methodologies for the sport.
The workshop was inaugurated with an opening ceremony that included speeches from prominent figures in the Maltese sports community. CEV instructor and European Coaches Commission (ECOC) Secretary Remko Kenter delivered lectures on the importance of Volleyball in physical education, the benefits of the sport for pupils, and innovative teaching methods. The participants engaged in hands-on sessions where they learned and practiced various volleyball drills and techniques. These sessions were specifically designed to be easily replicable in school environments. The day concluded with a Q&A session, allowing participants to seek clarifications and share experiences. This was followed by a networking event to foster connections among PE teachers.
Key takeaways from the first day of the workshop included an enhanced understanding of Volleyball rules and methodology, innovative strategies for teaching Volleyball to young pupils, and a practical experience in conducting Volleyball drills and exercises.

For the remainder of the weekend, the focus shifted to Beach Volleyball, with each day catering to 25 participants. These sessions were designed for beginners, aiming to introduce them to the basics of Beach Volleyball and develop their foundational skills.
Each day began with an introduction to the sport, including its similarities and differences from indoor Volleyball. The participants received instruction on fundamental skills and preparatory games, with an emphasis placed on proper technique and footwork. Various drills were conducted to reinforce the skills learned. Participants practiced in pairs and small groups to simulate real game scenarios. The sessions included friendly mini tournaments, allowing participants to apply their skills in a competitive, yet supportive environment. Coaches provided individual feedback to all participants, thereby highlighting areas of improvement, and offering tips for further practice.
Key takeaways from these sessions included a basic understanding of the Beach Volleyball rules and gameplay, the development of essential Beach Volleyball skills, and experience in playing Beach Volleyball in a supportive and structured setting.

The national workshop was a resounding success, with a high level of participation and engagement from both PE teachers and beginners in Beach Volleyball. The workshop not only enhanced the participants’ skills and knowledge but also fostered a sense of community and enthusiasm for the sport. This event marks a significant step in the promotion and development of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball in Malta, with potential long-term benefits for the local sports landscape.
