Ljubljana, Slovenia, April 16, 2019. Last weekend was all about Volleyball in the beautiful Savinjska valley, where 750 kids from three countries gathered to take part in the biggest youth Volleyball event in Slovenia, the Savinjska valley Cup.
The Odbojkarski klub SIP ŠEMPETER played host to the event for the fifth time, this year for the first time with the support of the Volleyball Federation of Slovenia (OZS). The OZS and local organisers agreed to recognise the event as one of the major activities taking place as a part of the CEV School Project.
The tournament united no less than 750 kids in the U-13 category from Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Girls and boys from 74 teams played 151 matches in just one day on 14 courts set up in seven sports halls in Šempeter, Prebold, Griže, Žalec, and Braslovče.
A special guest at the event was the CEV’s Project Coordinator Ricardo Leite from the Technical and Development Department, who visited all venues and witnessed the great fighting spirit and impressive level of Volleyball skills shown by the kids. Besides contesting their matches, the young participants learned about the importance of fair play and clean sport as well.
A day earlier, Mr Leite visited two elementary schools in Ljubljana, OŠ Milana Šuštaršiča and OŠ Riharda Jakopiča to follow up on their CEV School Project activities, as the CEV donated almost 300 Mikasa balls and 30 nets to 37 Slovenian schools for the OZS project Rasti z odbojko, aka ‘Grow with Volleyball’.
The OZS is now already looking forward to the next two major projects coming up in June - the Summer Beach Volleyball festival ‘Odbojkariada’ in Ljubljana and the ‘99 Days’ event, which will be taking place in Ljubljana as well, host of the CEV EuroVolley 2019 – Men, as a family day with 99 Volleyball courts set up all across Slovenia’s capital.
