As soon as the schools returned from the Easter holidays, a second Year 9 & 10 (U15) qualifying tournament was organised during the month of April by the Malta Volleyball Association (MVA) for Secondary school students in conjunction with the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’.
On Wednesday, April 19, it was the turn of the girls to compete in their tournament. This event followed that for the boys held earlier in March. Seven schools were represented in this tournament.
St Monica School Birkirkara, STMC St Lucia Secondary, MRC Ex-Lily of the Valley Mosta Secondary, SBC Kirkop Secondary, STMC Zejtun Secondary, St Martin’s College and MRC Zokrija Mosta Secondary fielded one team each as around 80 students were present for a very eventful morning.
The teams played a round robin format with one set of 25 points each. All teams played six sets each. At the end of the tournament, the top four teams qualified for the Finals to be held during the last week of April.
The qualified teams were St Monica Birkirkara who won all their games, St Martin’s College, MRC Ex-Lily of the Valley Mosta and STMC St Lucia Secondary.
At the start of the event, the players had the chance to congratulate three of the participating students who had just won a bronze medal for Malta in the CEV SCA U18 Championship held at Cottonera Sports Complex the weekend before.
