Earlier this month, the Secretary of the European Refereeing Commission (ERC) for the 2020-2024 term, Mr Arturo Di Giacomo, travelled to Portugal to attend the annual meeting organised by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV) with their international and national referees. This was a truly special and valuable opportunity to share the vision developed by the ERC over the course of the past few years to ensure consistent and smooth refereeing in all international and domestic competitions contested across Europe.

A large number of referees attended the workshop organised by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation

The workshop lasted for two days, and it featured a variety of videos and Power Point presentations whereby Mr Di Giacomo emphasised the importance of teamwork and the role of the challenge referee – which is becoming more and more important knowing that the use of this technology has gained traction in many European countries. Moreover, Mr Di Giacomo shared many insights from his own experience as Referee Coach – a role that is especially important in the continued efforts made to grow the next generation of elite European referees.

The event was moderated by ERC member for the 2020-2024 term, Mr Avelino Azevedo, who is responsible for refereeing activities at the Portuguese Volleyball Federation, with full support from the FPV.
