ERC President exchanges with Romanian officials on rules tests in advance of major competitions

The President of the European Refereeing Commission (ERC), Arturo Di Giacomo, travelled this past week to Romania upon invitation of their National Federation to meet with Romanian referees and other match officials due to attend upcoming major international competitions such as the CEV Volleyball European League and the CEV EuroVolley 2026 Men. The city of Cluj-Napoca will be playing host to CEV EuroVolley pool matches this coming September. 

Mr Di Giacomo seized this opportunity to introduce the local refereeing community to the latest rules tests – which are currently being applied across European competitions. Special educational materials designed for the occasion were shared with the attendees and more specifically with the Romanian international referees to discuss the main goals and the procedures to apply such rules tests – as well as to collect feedback resulting from experiences on the ground. 

Romanian Volleyball Federation President Adin Marian Cojocaru and ERC member Oana Sarb joined the sessions as well, thereby raising the profile of the event even further in a display of the key role and importance played by the current evolution of European Volleyball refereeing.  

“The exchanges with the Romanian officials were highly productive and the many questions, remarks, and experiences shared helped establish a real dialogue around the rules tests and their application,” Mr Di Giacomo said. “This initiative shows the importance of a close collaboration among the ERC, National Federations and their respective international referees to ensure that we are all aligned in our understanding of how the rules are evolving and to improve the overall quality of European refereeing,” he concluded.
