CEV President emphasises focus on gender equality in address to Italian Women’s Volleyball League General Assembly

CEV President Aleksandar Boričić has travelled to Italy to attend the final stage of the women’s national cup in Bologna as well as to address the delegates attending the General Assembly of the Italian Women’s Volleyball League.

The CEV President emphasised the focus that the organisation that he has been leading since late 2015 has placed on gender equality:
“We very much wanted to work on ensuring equal treatment for male and female athletes and the numbers prove us right: the Super Finals of the CEV Champions League, where on the same day the men’s and women’s final matches are contested, have been a huge success. Furthermore, the prize money is now the same, thus completing this virtuous process.”
Regarding the future of European competitions and the challenges brought about by a very demanding schedule for players and coaches alike, he said: “More and more fans from outside Europe converge to watch our matches, and this is very good for our Volleyball family. We have assessed the idea to launch a Youth Champions League: we believe it is an economically sustainable project and that it can lay the foundations for the growth of a new generation of players. Regarding the planning, we work closely with FIVB to find a solution: in Europe, we have very strong national championships and continental competitions, which does not happen as much in the rest of the world. It is necessary to make sure that the Clubs and the athletes are respected. Together with the FIVB, we are studying a new contract model that can be valid globally, to give further importance to the work of athletes and Clubs.”

In closing his address, President Boričić declared: “Italy is experiencing its golden years of Volleyball, and this is thanks not only to the athletes, but to the hard and continuous work of the Clubs and the Federation: strong championships attract investments and, the latter, allow great results. I do not want any revolution, but I am for the continuous evolution of Volleyball: the doors of the CEV are always open for the clubs of the Italian Women’s Volleyball League and for President Fabris.”
