Wagrain to host first international Snow Volleyball events since pandemic outbreak

The Austrian ski resort of Wagrain-Kleinarl will be hosting in mid and late February the first two stops of this year’s CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour and in doing so help resume Snow Volleyball international competition after the long hiatus caused by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020.

The European Tour will return to Wagrain for two events on consecutive weekends – February 19-21 and 26-28 – and there could not be any better place for the actual resumption of Snow Volleyball competition since the Austrian resorts is the real ‘birthplace’ of the sport.

Wagrain is indeed where Snow Volleyball unofficial competition started more than 10 years ago and since 2016, the village has continuously been playing host to events held under the umbrella of the CEV and FIVB. Moreover, Wagrain hosted the inaugural Snow Volleyball European Championships in March of 2018 – as well as the very first stop of the FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour a year later,.

The CEV continues to liaise with other National Federations and event promoters in order to deliver more international Snow Volleyball events this winter while monitoring the development of the pandemic, the resulting restrictions and keeping the safety and well-being of all involved as its top priority.

Special relief package announced to support organisation of Snow Volleyball competitions

In an effort to support the delivery of the 2021 Snow Volleyball season and to deal with the many challenges brought by the global health crisis, the CEV Board of Administration agreed on a number of exceptional measures at their last virtual meeting.

To continue with the unprecedented relief policy launched earlier this year shortly after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the CEV BoA approved a package of measures aimed at securing the safe delivery of Snow Volleyball events this season. The package includes the following actions:

  • A financial allocation of € 2,500 per gender to the organisers of European Tour stops

  • A travel allowance of € 300 per team for those travelling to contest European Tour events

  • Waiving the license fee for the 2021 Snow Volleyball season

The CEV is working closely with National Federations and event promoters in order to release a tentative calendar of the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour 2021, whose publication will follow in due course. Despite all constraints, we all look forward to taking Volleyball back to some iconic locations across Europe and to playing the game on snow again!

CEV releases specific hygiene guidelines for Snow Volleyball competitions

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic cut the 2020 Snow Volleyball season short, resulting in the cancellation of a number of events, including the much-anticipated second edition of EuroSnowVolley due to take place in St. Anton am Arlberg (Austria).

Despite the many challenges still brought by this unprecedented global health crisis, we are all looking forward to a successful 2021 Snow Volleyball season! We invite National Federations, promoters and ski resorts to share their plans for the organisation of CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour stops, domestic events as well as exhibition matches to help us develop and grow this young, fresh and highly entertaining version of the Volleyball game!

In order to make sure that any such events take place with the safety and well-being of all involved as the top priority, the CEV has produced a comprehensive set of hygiene guidelines for the delivery of Snow Volleyball competitions in times of coronavirus pandemic. These follow the example set by Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, whose activities resumed earlier this year with much success and in full compliance with the relevant guidelines issued by international and national health authorities.

Let us spread some good vibes and take Volleyball to some of the most iconic locations in Europe to add another chapter to the success story on snow that started in 2016 with the first edition of the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour!
