Urban Volleyball Games help make the sport more accessible across Flanders
News
Volley Vlaanderen has designed and continues to develop the so-called Urban Volley Games, an innovative Volleyball concept that brings the sport into public spaces, such as schools, parks, and city centres. The project focuses on making Volleyball more accessible, visible and attractive for children, youngsters, and their families as well. By using compact courts, creative game formats and an urban look and feel, the aim is to lower the threshold for participation and introduce new audiences to Volleyball.
Over the past years, the project has been gradually implemented with much success across several locations in Flanders, both via temporary events and more permanent installations. It has become an important tool to support youth participation, activate public spaces, and promote Volleyball in a modern and playful way.
The plan is also to mobilise and recruit more young boys to play the game – as girls far outweigh their male peers in Volleyball participation while creating a movement whereby the kids feel members of something engaging, cool, and big at the same time.
The results are promising and the concept has already yielded impressive dividends in Flanders, thereby also establishing Volleyball as a sport that can be played everywhere.
