More than a decade of protecting the environment in Békéscsaba

The five-time Hungarian champions, three-time MEVZA Cup winners BRSE from Békéscsaba remain committed to supporting initiatives that aim for sustainable development, environmental protection, and attitude-shaping youth and sports events.

In the framework of the annual European Mobility Week, 2026 Hungarian Cup winners BRSE also joined the Car-Free Day movement, which – with the help of participants in the initiative – raises environmental consciousness, popularises bike usage, and encourages walking.

It is worth mentioning that not only do the players of Békéscsaba Volleyball Sport Club (BRSE) use their bikes on this special day, but they also rely on this mode of transport in their everyday lives. Many players, who signed with the club this past summer, immediately joined the movement. 

The club started this campaign more than ten years ago in the 2015/2016 season, when supporters could purchase unique bikes for team members and for the staff with the names of the players and their jersey numbers on them. This initiative was a huge success. In a short period of time, several entrepreneurs and donors came in and stood by this excellent cause; they saw potential in this idea, and they supported the club as much as they could, and this was widely reported across written media.

“More than a decade ago, we came up with the idea to provide each of our players and members of the staff with a unique bicycle with their name and number, courtesy of the help of our supporters. The idea of the project has since been adopted in several European countries, which fills us with joy and pride. Sustainability is essential for the club; we want to set a good example for the future generations. The cycling infrastructure in Békéscsaba is great; significant improvements have been made over the last few years,” said Ádám Baran, president of BRSE.

Békéscsaba is an ideal city for cyclists, as its bicycle path network has expanded to over 90 kilometres in recent years. And this number is about to grow further, as there are ongoing construction projects to give more opportunities for people to protect the environment and live a healthier lifestyle.
