Yerevan-Avan and KhMOMM triumph at Armenian Youth Championships

The Volleyball Federation of Armenia (VFA) organised this past May 19-22 their Youth National Championships, a competition named after the former President of the organisation, Mr Khachik Asmaryan, with participation of six teams per gender.

The first goal of the organisers was the participation of teams from across the whole Caucasus country. The tournament took place at the sports hall owned and run by the Armenian Defence Ministry, which is available for national team competitions and clubs as well. A large number of officials from the Ministry of Sports and the Yerevan City Administration attended the opening ceremony.  

The championship featured many close and highly entertaining matches, with all teams fighting hard in an effort to reach the finals. In the women’s championship, Team Yerevan-Avan claimed top honours, with Team Van and Team Artsakh completing the podium. In the men’s competition, KhMOMM were the eventual winners, with CSKA and FIMA finishing in second and third place, respectively.

A number of members of the Presidium of the Volleyball Federation of Armenia, former students of Khachik Asmaryan and his own son David Asmaryan awarded the medallists during the closing ceremony. The Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Championship, VFA Secretary General Karen Asmaryan congratulated all the participating teams, thanked the members of the Organising Committee for their hard work and presented special awards to the referees and other officials.

Next year, the VFA will be trying to hold the championship by inviting teams from neighbouring countries as well, thus making it a competition of an international calibre and status.
