CEV President Roko Sikirić attended earlier this week the 55th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) held in Budapest, which provided an excellent opportunity for the highest authority in European Volleyball to engage with a large number of high-profile leaders from across the Olympic and sporting movement.
The gathering brought together – among other speakers and dignitaries – IOC President Kirsty Coventry, IOC Members, National Olympic Committee leaders, Presidents of International and European Federations, as well as representatives of the wider sporting community to discuss the future of sport and the opportunities and responsibilities that lie ahead.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry addressed the EOC General Assembly for the first time since taking office last June and discussed a variety of topics that the Olympic movement is currently confronted with – starting with lessons already taken from her ‘Fit for the Future’ initiative to geopolitical issues and the current debate around the provision of prize money for athletes competing at the Olympics.
Presentations and updates were provided by the Organising Committees of major multi-sport events such as the Istanbul 2027 European Games, next year’s European Youth Olympic Festivals (EYOFs) due to take place in Brasov, Romania (winter) and Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy (summer), as well as the upcoming Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, and Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
“As one of Europe’s leading sports, Volleyball remains fully committed to contributing to the Olympic Movement and to working alongside the EOC and all other stakeholders to strengthen the positive impact that sport can have throughout Europe and even further beyond, even more so in the still much polarised world that we live in,” the CEV President said.
