Overview

After defeating Georgia and Denmark in the qualifications, Portugal will now try to stop Ukraine. The two teams have never played one another at an international event but Portuguese spiker from the Italian Serie A1 - Julia Kavalenka and Ukrainian super star on the same position – Olesia Rykhliuk have surely motivated the rest of their teams before their last game of the group phase.

Match Report

Portugal couldn't surprise Ukraine

Article

This was a match for two teams trying to avoid the last place in the group. It was also the first time Portugal and Ukraine met each other at this high level tournament ever. Ukraine showed that they are the stronger team of the two and was in the lead the whole first set. Portugal slowly came closer and had contact at 20-20 but couldn't thrill their opponents much more.

Portugal was in the lead only one time in the match, in the beginning of the third set, but Ukraine closed the net completely and unfortunately Portugal will leave the Championships with only one won set. Although Portugal gained useful experience for the future.

Day 7 Recap

"The stress defeated us yesterday. We knew we had to win but how to win when you cannot figure out your serve and bring out your offensive potential. Today was a completely different story and so our game was different. Sadly we are going back home but we will definitely remember the hospitality and the good organization here in Łódź."

Nadiia Kodola, outside-spiker for Ukraine

"It was a much needed experience for our team. Some of our girls haven't had a chance to compete with the senior team internationally like that so the difficult games we played can only benefit in the future"

Marta Hurst, outside-spiker for Portugal
