Turkey delight home crowd to start EuroVolley campaign on high note

Article

Turkey and Greece, although they share a long-lasting sporting rivalry, locked horns for the very first time on the EuroVolley stage, with Greece celebrating their comeback to Europe’s prime competition since the 2001 edition held in Bulgaria. Turkey’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, Mr Mansur Yavaş were among the many fans in attendance.

After coming from behind in the first set, Turkey looked especially dominant in the third set, where they stormed to a mighty 10-1 lead, which eventually resulted in a landslide 25-8 win. Day 1 Recap

Play

“We are very excited and happy with being at EuroVolley. We are here again after a break of many years. We want to do our best and continue our journey in this edition of EuroVolley. We started the tournament against a strong opponent such as Turkey and tomorrow we will play another very important game against France. We want to play even better than we did tonight.”

“The first day in such tournaments is really challenging. Today, I am very happy to have shown such a performance in front of the audience in Ankara and to have secured such a victory. I hope that we will continue the tournament in the same way. I would like to thank our fans for the nice atmosphere. While I was listening to the national anthem, I really had goose bumps. My eyes were full of tears. I was excited, of course, but I did not expect that to happen. Everything was fine until the game. I was so excited that I could have fainted. We will go to the hotel and start our preparations for the match with Finland. I hope it will be good as much as today’s match was. It was a nice way to start the tournament, so I am sure it will go on likewise.”
