Following the many activities that they have been running in conjunction with the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’, the Volleyball Federation of Armenia (VFA) are now reaping the fruits of their hard work, with good news coming in from the Caucasus country as a youth volleyball club for girls has been established in the Garni community, Kotayk Province.

This village truly has a special place in Armenian history and civilisation. Garni Pagan Temple, an ancient Armenian sun worshipping temple, is a popular sightseeing destination, and it is regarded as a major remnant of ancient Armenian history and culture. The pagan temple of Garni was supposedly built in 77 AD. Movses Khorenatsi attributes the foundation of Garni to the great-grandson of Hayk Nahapet Gegham, whose grandson, Garnik, is said to have been named Garni.

The VFA has already devised plans to hold festivals and many other events in the vicinity of the Garni Temple. Recently, VFA representatives visited High School No. 2 in Garni, where the newly formed youth volleyball club has been training. The team was formed upon the initiative of Mr Andranik Tadevosyan, a resident of the community, coach of Geghashen volleyball girls’ team, and Head of Volleyball in Kotayk Province.

VFA representatives were responsible for the delivery of a volleyball festival at this very same school, with participation of more than 20 children. The newly established volleyball club was provided with sports equipment by the VFA to make sure that activities continue to flourish and that even more children are inspired to play the game.
