On Wednesday, the President and Secretary of the European Refereeing Commission (ERC), Arturo Di Giacomo and Avelino Azevedo, visited the home of European Volleyball in Luxembourg to meet with the staff responsible for Beach Volleyball, Snow Volleyball and Refereeing Matters and devise plans for the months ahead.

The discussions revolved around the CEV EuroBeachVolley 2025 due to take place in late July and early August in Düsseldorf, Germany, as well as the 2025 edition of the CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup Final. These are two major events whose successful organisation and delivery require a collective effort and contribution from elite referees as well. The nominations, including for the referees in charge of the Challenge System, will follow in due course. It was agreed that at major events such as EuroBeachVolley and the Nations Cup Final efforts would be made to rely on the best possible technology and to appoint the most qualified challenge referees to contribute to the overall success of such elite competitions.

The working group did also focus on next year’s age-group European Championships and the Beach Pro Tour Futures – an ideal opportunity for up-and-coming referees, including candidates, to gain valuable international experience and grow their skills. The ERC will work on appointing referees early enough to facilitate everyone’s work whereas a refresh course for Beach Volleyball Referee Coaches will be organised in 2025 too thereby discussing a variety of topics to make sure that these officials are best equipped to fulfil their role.

Moreover, the ERC will also continue to support Snow Volleyball activities too – the youngest version of the Volleyball game which has very much potential to promote the sport by taking it to unique, iconic locations across Europe.

In an effort to raise the quality of European Beach Volleyball competitions, the ERC will also be working on reviewing and discussing referees’ statistics and other data to further improve the quality of Beach Volleyball refereeing.
