Youth national champions crowned in Armenia

This past May 16-19, the 2024 Khachik Asmaryan Youth Volleyball Championship was held in Yerevan, with participation of six men’s and seven women’s teams. This championship was held for the third time, and it bears the name of Khachik Asmaryan, former President of the Volleyball Federation of Armenia from 2003-2010, former head coach of the national team of Armenia, honoured coach of Armenia and a renowned figure in the Caucasus country.

The teams participating in the championship had been preparing for this important competition for a long time and the fans witnessed many exciting matches, especially in the final stage of the event. The Volleyball Federation of Armenia and Khachik Asmaryan’s family did everything they could to deliver the championship at the highest level, with an emphasis on fair play. The teams representing Van and Geghashen contested the women’s final, with Team Geghashen eventually securing a 3-1 victory. The Yerevan-based FIMA Team took the third place. The men’s final was a very nice match eventually won by Team FIMA. 

The prize-winning teams were awarded by members of the VFA Board of Administration, as well as by Khachik Asmaryan’s son and grandson. The best athletes of the championship were also awarded with special prizes and gifts. Some of Khachik Asmaryan’s former students were awarded as well. 

In his speech, VFA Secretary General Karen Asmaryan said that this championship has reached an unprecedented level and that the VFA is planning to turn it into an international competition, which will be a very good way to prepare for the historic 2025 U16 Men European Championship to be held in Yerevan.
