The U18 women’s national team of Bulgaria – crowned European champions in this age group earlier this summer – has received a major recognition of their accomplishment. They were indeed awarded with the ‘Sports Icarus’ prize at a solemn ceremony organised for the 32nd time by the Bulgarian Sports Foundation and the Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC).
The event was attended by Olympic, world and European medallists, distinguished athletes, coaches and officials, journalists, as well as representatives of the business and culture communities.
Awards were given across as many as eight categories and presented by big names in Bulgarian sports. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation and member of the CEV Board of Administration, Mr Lubomir Ganev, as well as by the Acting Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Georgi Glouchkov. The Minister congratulated all the athletes who represented Bulgaria with much dignity during the year, as well as their coaches and the heads of the national federations.
Earlier this summer, the youngsters coached by the legendary Antonina Zetova caused a sensation with their #EuroVolleyU18W triumph. At the event co-hosted by Romania and Greece, they beat pre-favourite Italy in a drama-filled semifinal that ended 18-16 at the tiebreak before they rushed to a comprehensive 3-0 victory in the final match with Belgium.
