Fenerbahce star Melissa Vargas becomes a Turkish citizen

Istanbul, Turkey, April 11, 2021. The star opposite hitter of Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL, Cuba-born Melissa Vargas has become a citizen of Turkey following a special ceremony held at Vahdettin Pavilion in Istanbul on Saturday. Fenerbahçe Opet’s team captain Eda Erdem Dündar and setter Naz Aydemir Akyol were among the guests in attendance.

Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu received her Turkish ID from the very hands of the President of Turkey, Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after completing an application previously submitted by the Turkish Volleyball Federation.

Vargas thanked President Erdogan and said that she feels honoured with the opportunity to represent Turkey. She very much looks forward to playing for the Turkish women’s national team and she will be doing her best to represent the ‘Sultans of the Net’ in the best possible way.

President Erdogan emphasised his continuous support to the Volleyball game and said the members of the Turkish women’s national team will receive a COVID-19 vaccine before they travel to Japan later this summer to compete at the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation Mehmet Akif Üstündağ was unable to join the event in Istanbul as he is currently in quarantine but following the ceremony, he extended best wishes to the Turkish Volleyball family, stressing that Vargas is one of the key players in the highly competitive Turkish league.

Vargas, who has been playing for Fenerbahçe Opet since 2018, previously represented her native Cuba at the 2014 FIVB Women’s World Championship held in Italy.
