Aberdeen, Scotland, October 15, 2019. The MACvolley S456 Aberdeen Festival saw budding school teams descending on the Granite City in a timely fashion raring to go for the first MACvolley school festival of the 2019/2020 school year run by the Scottish Volleyball Association (SVA).

There were many new faces entering the competition and every team held their own and competed throughout the day. A very strong contingent from Stromness Academy & Kirkwall Grammar School travelled overnight on the ferry from Orkney to attend the festival. The day was a brilliant mix of schools and levels all competing in the MACvolley spirit.

For many pupils it was also their first experience of being on a referees stand, however, all schools and individuals took to the task with unbelievable enthusiasm and in return, the teams and players showed great sportsmanship.

There was a significant amount of spectacular rallies in the girls’ competition as players showed great desire to compete. Aberdeen Grammar School eventually retained the trophy after some impressive displays.

Aberdeen Grammar School (AGS) took the Boys title as well after a very competitive top pool, with Kemnay pushing all the way in their attempts to foil the Grammar double. The experience that the AGS boys have gained from being part of the Volleyball Aberdeen team in the Junior SVL and competing in the Flying Scots is starting to pay dividends in the boys’ level of play.

“A massive thank you to Aberdeen Sports Village and to all the schools and staff who made such a great effort in terms of organising as well as encouraging and developing their pupils in our amazing sport,” said 2012 Olympian and Regional Development Officer East, Lynne Beattie. “We were delighted to award two Spirit of the Tournament awards to pupils who showed fantastic understanding of what it takes to be humble and help out others from different teams throughout the day.”

The Scottish Volleyball Association are one of 13 National Federations (NFs) to have implemented, with much success, the CEV School Project, which encourages the development of the game at the grassroots level through the cooperation between schools and clubs. The list includes the following NFs as well: Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, Ireland, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
