As many as 47 coaches and 11 PE teachers from across Cyprus came together this past weekend for the fourth national workshop organised in 2025 in conjunction with the CEV School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’. Similar actions had previously taken place in other countries involved in the EU-funded programme – namely in Albania, Greenland, and Slovenia.

The Cyprus Volleyball Federation has been a partner of the CEV project since 2019 and this action will certainly help raise the profile of the programme even further. The workshop started with a theoretical session held in Pefkos Hotel in Limassol followed by a practical session that took place at the nearby AEL Limassol Sports Hall.

Maria Farsund from Norway, a member of the European Coaches Commission, was the speaker leading the two sessions. She presented the CEV School Project concept, the educational material produced this far (such as the handbook, a variety of videos and much more) and referred many times to valuable lessons she has taken from her extensive experience as a coach working with young players. During the afternoon session, she introduced a series of exercises and drills, all connected to the theoretical principles that she had previously discussed in the morning.

All participants received the new CEV School Project handbook PVGW2.0, and  access to the database of educational videos produced by the CEV and the project partners.

The event literally broke new ground as the first such workshop ever organised in Cyprus. The Cyprus Volleyball Federation has devised plans for a repeat in May of 2026 in order to provide an opportunity for more coaches and teachers to advance and improve their knowledge of the game. This workshop is mandatory for teachers and coaches involved in the educational programme and coaching license system developed for Volleyball in Cyprus.

The workshop ended with a ceremony where certificates of attendance were distributed to all 58 coaches and teachers, and medals presented to the kids who had helped with the delivery of the practical session. One of the teachers participating in the workshop represents a teachers’ association in Cyprus and he has already confirmed plans to visit schools and spread the knowledge he has acquired, thereby making sure that as many kids as possible are introduced to Volleyball in the Mediterranean island.

“I am very glad that we finally managed to organise such a workshop for our teachers and coaches, because school volleyball is the heart and the soul of Cyprus Volleyball in general. Since our Federation joined the CEV School Project, we have noticed a huge progress and much more interest for Volleyball from kids, parents, and schools. Many kids never saw or touched a volleyball before they got involved in CEV School Project activities.”
