The Snow Volleyball season started a few weeks ago when the youngest and coolest version of the Volleyball game enjoyed its premiere at a multi-sport event – the inaugural European Universities Winter Championships run by the European University Sports Association (EUSA) in Val di Zoldo, Italy.

Snow Volleyball in Val di Zoldo was played against the iconic backdrop of the Dolomites

Six men's and five women's teams from across six countries did contest the Snow Volleyball competition organised against the iconic backdrop of the Dolomites, with Austria and Czechia emerging victorious at the end of the women’s and men’s tournaments, respectively. Snow Volleyball did join the likes of Alpine skiing and snowboarding to compose the programme of a highly successful and historic first European Universities Winter Championships.

The addition of Snow Volleyball to the programme of such a multi-sport event is highly important for the growth of a winter sport that is still very much at an early development stage, especially compared to other, more-established winter disciplines, and it bodes well for its future perspectives.

“We are grateful for the positive and encouraging feedback we have received from our partners and friends at EUSA and that we could contribute to the success of the inaugural European Universities Winter Championships held in Val di Zoldo. Snow Volleyball continues to grow at a steady pace and its addition to the programme of a multi-sport event is good news for its further development across Europe through the involvement of young student athletes as well.”

Following the experience in Val di Zoldo, where CEV Snow Volleyball Coordinator Daniel Horvath did also join a panel discussion at the Winter Forum, the highest EUSA authorities, President Adam Roczek and Secretary General Matjaz Pecovnik, penned a letter to express their gratitude to the CEV, which reads: “We would like to thank you for your support and collaboration, as well as the recognition of this EUSA event. We fully recognise and appreciate the level of assistance you provided us in this successful event. With your help, we were able to meet the needs of the participants, who thoroughly enjoyed the event. Therefore, on behalf of EUSA, we would like to thank you for your contribution and devotion towards European universities sport development.”

With the CEV ready to look into further opportunities to expand the cooperation with EUSA, the EUSA Winter Championships in Val di Zoldo represented an ideal way to get the Snow Volleyball season underway, with a real highlight coming up in early March when Bakuriani, Georgia, will host the inaugural #EuroSnowVolleyU20 to provide youngsters from across Europe with a chance to shine and to make sure that the sport will continue to grow for many years to come.
